SERVICES
Routine gynecological exams and contraception are available.
Medical Abortion (up to 9 weeks):
When we first began offering medical abortion, my staff was very much
opposed to them. After several months of talking to patients who had
returned for their check-up after having had a medical abortion, my
staff became big advocates for this method.
The medical abortion requires only two visits to the office. On the
first visit, you will meet with the doctor and have an ultrasound. You
will be given Mifeprex (RU-486) to take by mouth. Later at home, you
will take four small pills (misoprostol) by mouth between 24 and 48
hours, after you take the first medication.
The medication doesn't affect your ability to drive; therefore you can
come to the office by yourself for both visits.
The medical abortion mimics a naturally occurring miscarriage, but it
takes a much shorter time and you will have medication for pain. You
will return to the office in two weeks and have the second ultrasound.
Most patients say the medical abortion was like a regular period or
a bad period. Many patients say that they had some bleeding and cramping
and didn't think that it worked but the second ultrasound showed an
empty uterus. There isn't any charge for the second visit because we
really want you to come back. Before you leave our office on the first
visit, you will receive the antibiotics and be given a prescription
for pain medication. We will thoroughly review all the instructions
for the procedure with you.
Surgical Abortion
Before your appointment. If you were planning a surgical abortion
with oral or IV medication, you'll need someone with you to drive
you home. If you choose the IV medication, we require that you not
eat or drink, including water, at least eight (8) hours before the
procedure.
When you arrive at our office, my staff will record your medical history
and an ultrasound will be performed. Then the doctor will discuss
the procedure and answer any questions you may have. Immediately before
the procedure, you will receive IV or oral medication, making the
surgical procedure as safe and comfortable as possible. The actual
procedure is anywhere from two to five minutes. The average recovery
time is twenty to thirty minutes. When you are ready to leave, we
give you an antibiotic medication and a prescription for pain medication
for home. We will schedule a return appointment for three weeks at
no additional charge.
Time of office visits:
I am a private, board certified gynecologist. I treat all my patients
with care and consideration. I choose to schedule a limited number
of patients each day. Medical abortion patients and surgical abortion
patient, who are under 12 weeks pregnant, will usually be in the office
one to two hours. For patients above 12 weeks pregnant, it might be
approximately three hours. All surgical patients will have a follow-up
visit in three weeks. A return visit will be schedule in 2 weeks for
medical abortion patients.
